Graphics in Mathcad

Mathcad graphics allows building the following:

  • Contour plot - of surfaces of the identical level (isolines);
  • Plot in form of data dots in three-dimensional space;
  • Bar Plot;
  • 2-D Vector Field Plot.

The given plots are characterized by a specific character, which determines their being not that widely used in practice. Contour plot in Mathcad is nothing but an aggregation of lines, every line is a curve connecting points where the function of two variables has the same particular value (isolines). Such functions are widely used in cartography, geodesy, oceanology, ecology, etc. The succession of steps while contour graphing is the following. Firstly, the function of two variables f(x,y) is entered. Then it is important to define the values of хi , yj, , which assign discrete points on axes х, у. Values f(хi,yj) are entered into matrix М. Matrix М is shown as a map of isolines. The programme listing shows the example of contour plot construction.

Image formatting (the number of level lines, filling) в Mathcad in Mathcad is performed with help of the dialogue box 3-D Plot Format ), which is shown in the picture. Switch keys of the dialogue box allow the user to design the plot. For instance, switch keys of the group Contour Options ), which is shown in the picture. Switch keys of the dialogue box allow the user to design the plot. For instance, switch keys of the group:

  •  Fill – guarantees filling the plot according to the colour palette.
  •  Draw Lines – allows to show level lines.
  • Auto Contour – the number of contour lines is chosen automatically.
  • Numbered – level lines have numerical data shown.

The programme listing shows function graphs, which demonstrate Mathcad graphics which makes it possible to build bar plots, dot diagrams, vector field plots. One kind of a 3-D plot of a function of two variables can be transformed into another by means of inlay General of the dialogue box 3-D Plot Format. In order to transform one plot into another it is required to highlight the plot image and set the corresponding switch key of the Display As group. The plot takes the image in accordance with the set switch key:

  • Surfase Plot.
  • Contour Plot.
  • Data Points - dot diagram.
  • Vector Fields Plot.
  • Bar Plot.
  • Patch Plot (surface plot and dot diagram combined)).
